ADAMCLISI

By the beginning of the 20th century archeologists discovered what is known today as the most valuable Roman site on the Romania's territory, namely the ruins of the "Tropaeum Traiani" Triumphal Monument, alongside the "Tropaeum Traiani" fortress, at Adamclisi, a parish in Dobrudja.

The "Tropaeum Traiani" Triumphal Monument, built in 109 A.D., and dedicated to a Roman warrior, is a unique edifice in the Roman provinces due to its size and rich decorations. It is 40 m high, and has 54 metopes. The monument stands for the Dacian-Roman origin of the Romanian people.

Built during the same time, the fortress used to be one of the largest Roman civil settlements in Dobrudja. The fortress had imposing public edifices and civil constructions, towers and thick defence stone walls, flagstone paved streets, and a sewerage system. Nearly destroyed in the 2nd century A.D., it was built again in the next century, but after a while, under the pressure of the wandering tribes, it started to decay.
