THE HOLY MONASTERY DERVENT

2000 years ago, Saint Andrew preached christianity in the south of Dobrudja, together with his disciples. At some point, four of his disciples were stoned to death; four stone crosses stand today in the place of their martyrdom.

Along centuries, the crosses proved to be endowed with curind power addressing both corporal and mental diseases.

Inside the church there is a miracle-working icon of the Holy Virgin. It was donated to the Monastery in 1940. The miracle-working icon can be found left side of the narthex, on a tall iconostasis. The faithful one kneel underneath and ask the Holy Virgin for help.

Archimandrite Elefterie Mihail was the one who founded the monastery.

A Healing Spring is in the nut-tree orchard of the monastery. According to the legend, it is owed to St. Andrew who passed by the spot of the present-day monastery, and prayed for water, since he and his companions were thirsty. When he thrust his staff into the ground, water would spring up, and they say that those who drink or sprinkle it over theirs bodies in good faith are protected against evil and disease.

The present day Monastery was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The church was consacrated on the 5th of July 1936 under Bishop Gherontie of Tomis and Father Superior Elefterie Mihail. In 1950 the monastery was closed. On the 2nd of February 1990, Elefterie Mihail's request to reopen the monastery was endorsed; on the 12th of May of the same year, he passed away.
