HISTRIA

An ancient site and the oldest town on Romania'a territory, Histros or Histropolis (Histria) was a Greek colony founded in the 7th century B. C. by the Milettus Ionians on a gulf sea shore, at a mouth of the Danube river which no longer exists today.

The town was Romanized in the Ist century A.D. One can still see its vestiges precint walls, gates, districts, access ways, public and religious edifices, warmed up thermae (hypocaustrum), three hidden aqueducts (between the Fântânele village and the town). The town fell into ruin after the Avar-Slav invasions and was covered by the sand of the gulf.
