Located in the south-western part of Transylvania, on the Sebes riversides; between the 14th-17th centuries the Saxons built and restored the fortifications of the town, which was coined as an important political and administrative medieval centre, that saw the crafts and trade flourish; 30,000 inhabitants (1995) Access by train -Sibiu (74 km), Alba Iulia (18 km); by road - E 81 Alba Iulia (17 km), E 64 Sibiu (55 km).
Highlights
Evangelical Church (13th c.) blend of Romanesque, early Gothic, Transylvanian Gothic and Renaissance styles; valuable paintings and carvings; the largest polyptic altarpiece in Transylvania; beautiful collection of Anatolian carpets (15th-17th centuries); Citadel (14th-15th centuries) preserved in its former structure; Student's Tower (14th c.); Princely House (16th c.) served as home residence to Transylvanian princes like Ioan Zapolya; at present, Museum with sections of history, fine arts, Romanian, Saxon, African folk arts and natural sciences; typical Transylvanian houses (19th-20th centuries) all over the town.
